Schools to remain closed tomorrow due to heavy rains in Puducherry, Karaikal

In view of the incessant rain in the area, all government, private and aided schools will remain closed tomorrow. Puducherry and Karaikal.

Joint Director of Education VG Sivakami said in a press release on Thursday that in view of the rains in Puducherry and Karaikal regions, all schools in both the regions will remain closed on November 19.

Schools and colleges remained closed in these areas on Thursday due to heavy rains. Puducherry recorded 15.1 cm of rain till 7 pm on Thursday.

Heavy rain affected life

Normal life was disrupted in the Union Territory of Puducherry due to heavy rains on Thursday.

Since the onset of the north-east monsoon on October 26, Puducherry has recorded 68.2 cm of rain. The Collector said that Puducherry received heavy rains since Wednesday under the influence of a low pressure area over southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.

Karaikal received heavy rains and all precautionary measures were taken to prevent damage.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy visited the rain-ravaged residential colonies and briefed the people about the steps taken to alleviate their suffering. Earlier, the Chief Minister had announced various relief measures when heavy rains started in Puducherry. He also announced that the cash relief 5,000 will be distributed to each below poverty line family.

He had said that similar relief would be given to fishermen, construction workers and agricultural laborers to mitigate the hardships caused by heavy rains.

In the last few days, the southern states including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Coastal Andhra Pradesh have received heavy to very heavy rainfall.
