Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked the government over a WHO report that claimed India had 4.7 million Covid deaths, saying “science does not lie, Prime Minister Narendra Modi does”. Gandhi also demanded that the government should support the families who have lost loved ones by giving them a compulsorily compensation of Rs four lakh.

He said in a tweet, “47 lakh Indians died due to the Kovid epidemic. Not the 4.8 lakhs claimed by the government. Science doesn’t lie. Modi does it.” The former Congress president said, “Respect the families who have lost their loved ones. Support them with 4 lakh compensation.

The WHO said on Thursday that 14.9 million (one million = 10 lakh) people died either directly from COVID-19 or because of the pandemic’s impact on health systems and society.
