Scooby-Doo’s Velma is a lesbian, new Halloween movie confirms

“We made our intentions clear ten years ago,” producer Tony Cervon said.

Los Angeles:

After decades of rumors and suspense, one of animation’s worst-kept secrets has finally been confirmed: Scooby-Doo’s Velma is a lesbian.

Clips from the Halloween special “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo,” released this week, show the mind sleuth’s glasses fogging up and her cheeks turning red when she first meets villainous costume designer Coco Diablo.

“Okay, who am I kidding? I’ve been crushing on Daphne big time! What do I do? What do I say?” She asks her friend in the second scene.

In “Scooby-Doo” a gang of amateur detectives have been solving mysteries since 1969, delighting generations of kids as they expose a villain who always declares “If it weren’t for you weird kids” He would get away with it.”

The titular oversized dog, who will do anything for a “Scooby Snack,” stumbles upon clue-finding crimes with the help of friends Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma, who collectively make up “Mystery Incorporated.”

Fans have long agreed that Velma is queer, but the new film marks the first definitive confirmation.

Producers from the franchise’s various series and films have previously spoken out about Velma Dinkley’s sexuality, even though they haven’t been able to articulate it on screen.

In 2020 producer Tony Cervon posted an Instagram photo of Velma and another female character against a rainbow-themed Pride backdrop.

“We made our intentions clear ten years ago,” he wrote in the caption at the time. “Most of our fans got it. For those who didn’t, I suggest you take a closer look.”

Audi Harrison, director of the new film, told NPR that he didn’t expect Velma’s same-sex attraction to be “so overwhelming” and that he “just dressed up to have fun with the comedy of a weird teen crush.”

He added: “That being said, it feels great to be part of normalizing representation, especially with well-known franchises like Scooby-Doo!”

Fans took to social media to celebrate the news.

“OMG lesbian velma finally CANON IN THE MOVIES LET’S GOOOOOOO,” said in a tweet, which garnered over 200,000 likes. “Let’s go LESBIANS #Velma” wrote another.
