The lowest temperature of the season was recorded in the national capital on Thursday. Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road recorded a minimum temperature of 2.8 degrees Celsius today, the Indian Metrological Department (IMD) said.

Ayanagar and Ujwa recorded minimum temperatures of 2.2 degrees Celsius and 2.3 degrees Celsius, Hindustan Times reported citing IMD data.

According to the IMD, the visibility at Palam also dropped to a low of 25 meters and Safdarjung recorded 50 metres. The IMD classifies fog as shallow when visibility drops below 1,000 metres, ‘dense’ when visibility is between 200 and 500 metres, and ‘dense’ when less than 200 metres. It is ‘very dense’ when visibility is less than 50 metres.

IMD’s Delhi Regional Meteorological Department said there would be “dense to very dense fog” at many places.

“Visibility reported at 0530 hrs IST today, (in metres): Jammu and Kashmir: Jammu 25 Punjab: Bhatinda 0; Amritsar, Patiala 25 Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi: Ambala and Chandigarh, Palam 25 each; Safdarjung 50 Uttarakhand: Dehradun 200 North West Rajasthan: Ganganagar and Churu 25,” the IMD said.

Meanwhile, the smog pushed the overall air quality in the national capital to ‘very poor’ category with an overall air quality index of 330, according to SAFAR. Lodhi Road recorded an AQI of 313, Delhi University recorded an AQI of 340, T2 airport recorded an AQI of 349, all in the ‘very poor’ category. Noida and Gurugram recorded 350 and 336 AQI respectively.

According to the IMD, Delhi’s AQI is also likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ category till January 13.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in the national capital dropped to 4.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR for the next two days. IMD uses four color codes for weather warnings – green (no action required), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).

Some trains running near Delhi and neighboring states were running late due to fog while some were rescheduled. Talking about flight operations, the Delhi airport on Thursday issued a fog alert for all passengers. According to officials, the low visibility process is underway at the Delhi airport. Officials said that all flight operations are currently normal and passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.
