security lapse

A serious violation took place on Wednesday when Narendra Modi’s convoy on its way to Hussainiwala in Punjab got stuck on a flyover for nearly 20 minutes as protesters blocked the route, putting the Prime Minister at security risk and his onward journey. was stopped. Many questions arise. Why was this itinerary decided after bad weather got in the way of the helicopter’s flight, if it was not completely secured, as standard safety protocols would demand? How exactly this blockade came into effect should also be investigated. A lapse of this nature reveals a contingency that India cannot afford.

The Union Home Ministry has sought an explanation from the Congress-ruled government of Punjab. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has also accused the state’s rulers of deliberately endangering their security by being politically motivated. The Congress party responded to the charge by painting the episode as a gimmick to hide the popular apathy towards the BJP leader’s rallies in the state. While there is a need to fix accountability for the lapse, we must not let it lead to political turmoil. The security of the Prime Minister of India should be above party politics.
