Security tightened on VHP’s call for worship at mosque in Srirangapatna, Karnataka

Security has been beefed up in Srirangapatna, the erstwhile capital of 18th-century ruler Tipu Sultan in the district, following a call by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to offer prayers at the Jamia Masjid, who claimed it was destroyed for demolishing the Hanuman temple. was created later.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in the temple town to prevent any protest or procession.

Apart from the district police force, contingents of Karnataka State Reserve Police have also been deployed. Roads in the city have been barricaded and security pickets have also been made.

Bajrang Dal and VHP workers raised slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on motorcycles carrying saffron dupatta and saffron flag. Fearing protests, many shopkeepers around the temple downed their shutters for the day.

Members of fringe Hindu organizations have called for a protest march to the mosque. However, the administration has refused to allow it. State Home Minister Araga Gyanendra has directed the police to take all measures to ensure peace and public order in view of VHP’s ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ campaign.

Meanwhile, Shri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik condemned the sanctions saying they should be imposed on ‘them’. “Inside the mosque there is a Ganapati temple, a temple pond and a well. Despite all this, the mosques that run madrasas and offer prayers are wrong. It is ‘they’ who should be stopped. They should be thrown out. I condemn the BJP government which is trying to stop our protest,” Mutalik told reporters in Kalaburgi on Saturday.

Right-wing organizations have been claiming that the Jamia Masjid was an Anjaneya temple, which was destroyed by Tipu Sultan to build a mosque in its place. The organizations have submitted a memorandum to the district authorities seeking steps to survey the mosque and return the ‘Anjaneya Mandir’ to the Hindus, if their claim is found to be true.
