New Delhi: Indonesia’s most active volcano Merapi volcano erupted on Saturday (March 11) afternoon. According to reports, the volcano exploded and the hot cloud spread up to seven kilometers around. Merapi volcano is located in the Yogyakarta Special Region of Indonesia. According to Reuters, the volcano erupted at around 12 noon local time (0500 GMT) and a 1.5 km lava flow was seen.

The 2,963-metre-high (9,721 ft) Merapi is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes and was already at the country’s second highest alert level.

The statement said people living in the danger zone have been warned to stop any activity between 3 and 7 kilometers from the crater. Citing an official at the local monitoring post, Yulianto, Reuters reported that no residents had been evacuated.

“It has been observed only as a one-time event, 5-6 avalanches have occurred. If the coverage continues to increase and the distance is more than 7 kms, it is likely that residents will be recommended to evacuate,” Yulianto said.

Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, has more volcanoes than any other country. Merapi last erupted in 2010, killing more than 350 people.
