Sensex, Nifty firm in opening session

Major gainers on the Sensex chart were NTPC, PowerGrid, Axis Bank, SBI, Bajaj Finance and RIL.

BSE gauge Sensex climbed over 277 points in opening deals on Tuesday tracking an overall rally in global markets led by record-setting US stocks.

Continuing its winning momentum, the 30-share benchmark opened with significant gains and saw further consolidation as trading progressed. The Sensex was trading at 59,461.07, up 277.85 points or 0.47% in opening deals.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty ended up 80.40 points or 0.46% at 17,706.10.

In the previous session, which was also the first trading day of 2022, the Sensex closed nearly 930 points higher at 59,183; While the Nifty jumped around 272 points and closed at 17,626.

Major gainers on the Sensex chart on Tuesday were NTPC, PowerGrid, Axis Bank, SBI, Bajaj Finance and RIL- rising up to 2.31%.

On the other hand, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Wipro and Infosys were among the major laggards.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services said.

He added that if Monday’s FII buying is a sign of their renewed interest in India, financially major banks are likely to continue the momentum seen in the previous session.

However, the third wave of the pandemic is a cause for concern, though the market believes it is unlikely to impact economic activity, Mr Vijayakumar said.

He further added that the major headwind for markets globally is rising inflation which could be exacerbated by the disruptions caused by the Omicron variant.

Elsewhere in Asia, on Tuesday, US equities were trading higher tracking record gains on the first trading day of 2022.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.27% to $79.19 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Monday, buying shares worth Rs 575.39 crore, exchange data showed.
