Sensex, Nifty rise with auspicious start of Samvat 2078

The BSE 30-share Sensex closed at 60,067.62, up 295.70 points or 0.49%.

The domestic equity benchmark made smart gains on November 4 as investors created new positions in the special Muhurta trading session to mark the beginning of the Hindu Samvat year 2078.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty closed 87.60 points or 0.49% higher at 17,916.80.

In the Sensex kitty, major gainers were M&M, ITC, Bajaj Auto, L&T, Kotak Bank, Sun Pharma and Nestle India, rising up to 2.87%.

Conversely, ICICI Bank, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints and Dr Reddy’s ended in the red, falling up to 0.43%.

Brokers said buying activity picked up pace in the first session of Samvat 2078 as investors opened their new books.

He said that the festivities have increased further with the reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel.

Global equities were hovering near record peaks even after the Federal Reserve announced that it would cut its asset purchases by $15 billion a month from November, with investors taking heart from the US central bank’s assurances that it would be quick to raise rates. I was not.

Barring metals, all BSE sectoral indices ended in the green led by auto, consumer discretionary goods, capital goods, industries and FMCG.

A similar trend was seen in the broader markets, with the BSE small-cap index rising 1.36% and the mid-cap gauge rising 0.73%.

Domestic markets hold a one-hour Muhurta trading session every year on Diwali, known as ‘Vikram Samvat’, to mark the beginning of the traditional Hindu calendar year.

In the last Samvat 2077, the BSE Sensex rose 16,133.94 points or 36.97%, while the Nifty rose 5,048.95 points or 39.50%.

BSE and NSE will remain closed on November 5 on the occasion of Diwali Balipratipada.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹401.48 crore on November 3, while domestic institutional investors bought ₹195.55 crore, according to exchange data.
