Sensex rose nearly 274 points in early trade; Nifty climbs to 15,873

Sensex jumped nearly 274 points in early trade on Monday on significant gains in US markets and buying in major indices Reliance Industries and HDFC.

The 30-share BSE benchmark was trading 273.74 points higher at 53,067.36 in opening deals. The broader NSE Nifty rose 91.1 points to 15,873.25.

Tata Steel, Titan, Maruti, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, State Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, Reliance Industries and HDFC were the top gainers in early trade among Sensex firms.

In contrast, UltraTech Cement, Dr Reddy’s, Nestle and Hindustan Unilever were among the laggards.

Asian markets were trading on a mixed note with marginal losses in Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai, while Tokyo traded higher.

Stock exchanges in the US had ended with smart gains on Friday.

Prashant Taapsee, Vice President (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. said, “A cautious trend may continue as the markets will eagerly wait for the WPI inflation data to come out on Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude fell 1.57% to $109.80 a barrel.

The BSE benchmark had closed 136.69 points or 0.26% lower at 52,793.62 in the previous trade on Friday. The NSE Nifty fell 25.85 points or 0.16% to end at 15,782.15.

According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors continued their selling and offloaded shares worth Rs 3,780.08 crore on Friday.
