Serum Institute to launch COVID-19 vaccine for children in six months: Adar Poonawalla

Mr Poonawalla said Kovovax is under trial and has shown excellent data in all respects for the three-year age group.

Serum Institute of India (SII) plans to launch COVID-19 Vaccine for children in the next six months, the company’s CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Tuesday.

Participating in an industry conference, Mr Poonawalla said that the vaccine ‘Kovovax’ is under trial and will provide complete protection to children up to three years of age.

Currently, Kovishield and others covid Vaccines are approved for people over the age of 18.

“We have not seen very severe disease in children. Fortunately, there is no panic for children. However, we will launch a vaccine in six months for children, hopefully by the age of three,” Mr. Poonawalla said.

He said there are already two companies in India that have licenses and their vaccines will be available soon.

“I think yes, you should get your kids vaccinated. There’s no harm, these vaccines have been proven to be safe and effective and all that. But wait for the official announcements and go ahead with it.

“Our Vaccine kovovax Will be launched for children in six months,” Mr. Poonawalla said, kovovax Has been tested and has shown excellent data all the way up to the age group of three.

In addition, Mr Poonawalla said there is enough data to show that vaccines will work and protect children from infectious disease.

As of now, nothing can be said about the Omicron version as to how it will affect children, he said.

“I don’t know what will happen to Omicron but so far the kids haven’t been too badly affected by it (COVID-19) virus. I think his body, his cells and his lungs heal better.”
