Tiruppur: The Perumanallur police on Sunday arrested seven persons for kidnapping a contract employee of a textile company based in Avinashi.
The arrested people have been identified as Dinesh Kumar (24), Muthukumar (29), Saravanan (22), Deva (23), Easwaran (28), Ryan Sheikh (24) and Rithoy (21).
According to the police, the accused had kidnapped Santosh, who was working on a contract in a garment company in Avinashi for the past one year.
Santosh returned to his rented home in Kalampalayam after duty on Friday evening and got back on a two-wheeler informing his wife Manini Meher that he had to drop off a colleague at Athupalayam.
Police said Ms. Meher received a call around 2.30 a.m. on Saturday and an unidentified person informed that her husband was in the custody of a gang. The caller demanded a ransom of Rs 2 lakh to release Santosh. The woman transferred Rs 25,000 to the kidnappers. Police said she approached Perumanallur police after the kidnappers threatened to kill her husband if she did not pay the remaining ransom amount.
A special team traces the kidnappers to Theni and rescues Santosh. Seven people were arrested for the offense under Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) of the Indian Penal Code.
