Severe heat wave in Haryana, Punjab; Mercury at 48.1 degree Celsius in Gurugram

Heavy heat wave conditions prevailed in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi-NCR on Sunday and the mercury remained above normal. While Gurugram in Haryana recorded a temperature of 48.1 degrees Celsius, Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi recorded a temperature of 49.2 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest place in the Delhi-NCR region.

The Meteorological Department said the maximum temperature was recorded above 43 degrees Celsius at most places in Haryana. Hisar recorded 47.3 degrees Celsius, Sirsa 47.2 degrees Celsius, Rohtak 46.7 degrees Celsius and Bhiwani 46 degrees Celsius.

Muktsar in Punjab also remained in extremely hot weather conditions, recording a day temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius. Among other places in Punjab, Bathinda recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar recorded a scorching heat of 46.1 degrees Celsius.

Hot weather was also experienced in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur, where the maximum temperatures were recorded at 46.2 degrees Celsius and 46.1 degrees Celsius. Moga recorded a maximum temperature of 46.1 degrees Celsius while Firozpur recorded a maximum temperature of 46.9 degrees Celsius.

Ambala and Karnal recorded comparatively low temperatures during the day at 42.1 degree Celsius and 42.4 degree Celsius respectively.

Chandigarh, the shared capital of the two states, faced yet another hot day with a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted some relief from the scorching heat in Punjab and Haryana in the next two days.

The weather is likely to remain dry during the next 24 hours; Light rain is forecast at isolated places in the next 48 hours. The Met Office said that there is a possibility of dust storm and thundershower with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana on May 16 and 17.

Heat wave conditions are very likely to persist at many places with isolated heat wave conditions at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
