The list of Nobel Prize winners for the year 2021 will be announced in a few days. But even before this happens, the names of the winners of the Ig Nobel Prizes have been announced. The Ig Nobel Prize is awarded for groundbreaking research or discovery on an offbeat topic. It is essentially a parody of the Nobel Prize, which has been awarded since 1991. This time the winners are Germany’s Olke Sem Bulat and his allies.
So what makes Olke and his allies worthy of respect? His research on the correlation between nose-block and sex. Apparently, their research has shown that having sex and achieving orgasm can relieve the problem of nasal congestion! A study conducted on 18 couples showed that having intercourse for an hour can help you get rid of those annoying nose blocks.
The Ig Nobel Peace Prize was won by Steven Nelway, Ethan Beceris and David Carrier of the University of Utah. His research has been able to prove that the beard, apart from enhancing the beauty of the masculine face, also acts as a shield to protect the face. To prove this, he made a special compound resembling human bone and experimented with parchment. The experiment showed that the beard was able to fend off more than one type of attack on the human face.
Robin Radcliffe’s name comes at the fore in this list. An ardent wildlife lover and a research scholar at Cornell University, he has shown through experiments that if rhinos are raised in the air in an inverted manner (i.e. with the thor head down and thor feet upward), their body remains healthy. Addressing the public, Radcliffe said, “Everyone has to think a little differently about themselves.”
Many others, including those who studied waste chewing gum lying on the streets and the bacteria in them and how to prevent cockroach infestation, have also been honored.
Susan Schottz, winner of the Biology Prize, is the author of the book “The Secret Language of Cats.” At the Ig Nobel ceremony held at Harvard University, the awardees received paper trophies and some money.
