Shafali’s bowling, Yastika’s keeping gives more options to the team: Ramesh Powar

India may have struggled to score runs in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, which ended in a comprehensive defeat in the third match here on Monday, but coach Ramesh Powar believes the batting is on the right track.

“The wickets were slow and we weren’t expecting a lot of scoring games,” he said. The way Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana have batted, they are right in terms of batting.

The coach feels that Yastika Bhatia’s wicketkeeping and Shafali’s bowling give the team more options. “They open up options to play more all-rounders in the team,” he added. “We’re trying to create players that we can use in special situations or tours.”

Looking at the positives from the series, which India won 2-1, Powar said he can see the players grow individually. “And fitness has gone up a little bit,” he said. “Winning the series is important and the habit of winning is important…Hopefully we carry on this momentum in the days to come.”
