Sharjeel Imam gets bail in Jamia violence case

A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University PhD scholar Sharjeel Imam in a case related to the December 2019 violence at Jamia Millia Islamia campus.

The court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar granted the bail observing that he was not arrested in the case during the investigation. “Keeping in view the nature of the offense and the fact that he was not arrested during the course of investigation, the application is allowed,” CMM Kumar said.

Mr. Imam was granted bail subject to production of a surety bond of ₹25,000 along with a surety of like amount. In the present case, he has been booked under sections relating to rioting, attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder, among other sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Mr. Imam will remain in jail due to other matters.

In October, a Delhi court had rejected Mr Imam’s bail in a case where he had allegedly made inflammatory speeches and incited violence during the anti-CAA-NRC protests in 2019.

Mr Imam is also an accused in the “larger conspiracy” case of the Delhi riots, where he has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
