Shashthi in February 2022: Shukla Paksha Shashthi is one of the major days of Magha month according to the Hindu calendar. In February, Shashti is falling on 6th of this month. From 3.47 am on 6th February, it will end at 4.38 am on 7th February. Magha Shukla Paksha Shashthi is considered an auspicious event in southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

In some households, in the month of Magha, Shashthi Puja starts from Magha Amavasya and lasts for six days till Shashthi of Magha Shukla Paksha. Shashthi Puja is also known as Subrahmanya Shashthi Puja in many regions of the South.

Importance

People worship Lord Murugan on Magh Shukla Paksha Shashthi. He has many names associated with the god of war. People also call him ‘Karthikeya’, ‘Subramanya’, ‘Skanda’, ‘Kumaraswamy’ and ‘Kumaran’. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan was the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He was the commander in chief of Dev’s army.

It is believed that on the day of Magha Shukla Paksha Shashthi, Lord Murugan had conquered the demon ‘Soorpadman’. Therefore, to seek the blessings of the Lord, people observe fast and please Lord Murugan to fulfill their wishes.

Devotees wake up early, take bath in the morning and place pictures of Lord Ganesha and Lord Murugan in their homes. They offer them flowers, incense, sandalwood paste, vermilion, turmeric powder and make prasad at home. Devotees also read ‘Skanda Purana’ and recite ‘Skanda Shashthi Kavacham’ while worshiping.

Fasting

People can either fast for all the six days from Magha Amavasya to Magha Shukla Paksha Shashthi or can keep fast on the last day depending on their wish and health. They can either observe partial fasting or can opt for full day fasting. In partial fasting devotees can eat fruits whereas in full day fasting they are not allowed to eat or drink anything for 24 hours, not even water. Consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited on this day. The real fasting is keeping the senses calm and away from anger and lust.

It is often believed that those who observe a fast on this day and offer prayers to the Lord, they attain Ichhadhari.
