Sheryl Sandberg stepping down as Meta COO to focus on philanthropic work

Sherrill Sandberg, COO of Meta Platforms, has announced that she is stepping down after 14 years. Sandberg, the second most important person in meta after Mark Zuckerberg, announced his departure on Thursday via an official Facebook post. Sandberg said she would step down in the fall but would retain a seat on the board. Javier Olivan will be the next Chief Operating Officer, the Meta CEO announced via an official Facebook post.

CEO Zuckerberg called Sandberg’s departure “the end of an era”. “After 14 years, my good friend and partner Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down as Meta’s COO,” Zuckerberg said in an official post on Facebook. Zuckerberg said he does not plan to replace “Sherrill’s role in our (existing) framework.”

“I’m not sure it will be possible because he is a superstar who has defined the role of COO in his own unique way. But even if it is possible, I think the meta has reached the point where our products and business It makes sense for groups to integrate more closely, rather than streamline all business and operations functions separately from our products,” he noted in the FB Post.

Javier Olivan will be the next META COO but the role will be very different from that of Sandberg. “Xavi will become our next Chief Operating Officer as he will now lead our integrated advertising and business products, in addition to leading our infrastructure, integrity, analytics, marketing, corporate development and development teams. But this role will be different from what Sherrill has done. This will be a more traditional COO role where Xavi will be focused internally and operationally, building on its strong track record of making our execution more efficient and rigorous. As part of this, Molly Cutler, our VP Strategic Response, will join Xavi’s team and report to Naomi Gleit,” Zuckerberg said of the new framework, adding that Sandberg will officially meet on Meta later this year. How will the company operate after I have taken over as COO.

Zuckerberg said, “I am going to miss running this company with Sherrill. But I am delighted that she will continue to serve on our board of directors even after she is out of her day-to-day management role in the coming months.” We can benefit from their knowledge and experience.”

Going forward, Sandberg said she will focus more on her foundation and philanthropic work. “But I know this will involve focusing more on my foundation and philanthropic work, which to me is more important than ever given how important this moment is for women,” she revealed in the official post. As stated, she will continue to be a part of the board.

“Over the next few months, Mark and I will make changes to our Direct Report and I will be leaving the company this fall. I still believe as strongly in my mission as ever, and I am honored to be on META’s Board of Directors. Will continue to work,” Sandberg noted in a Facebook post.
