In a case of suspected food poisoning, a 16-year-old schoolgirl died and around 30 others fell ill after allegedly consuming shawarma from an eatery in Cheruvathur.

AT Manoj, Deputy District Medical Officer said that there is nothing to panic but “in view of the outbreak of bacteria, many people have been admitted to the hospital with symptoms after consuming food and water from eateries, hospitals. have been informed to closely monitor such cases which have symptoms of vomiting, fever and diarrhoea,” he said.

Since the test results found the presence of Shigella sonnei bacteria, the water source used for the restaurant will be further inspected. Along with this, the Health Department has decided to inspect the water sources in the surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety Department has also collected samples of food items and water from the eatery and sent them to the laboratory in Kozhikode for testing. Based on the results, further action would be initiated against the owner and management of the eatery, officials said. The police have so far arrested three people in the food poisoning case.

The arrest comes after 16-year-old Devanand, a resident of Karivelur, died after consuming shawarma from a restaurant. More than 30 children also suffered from food poisoning and are undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
