Shiv Sena wasted 25 years in alliance with BJP: Uddhav Thackeray

“I have accepted the challenge given by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that Shiv Sena should contest the elections on its own,” Thackeray said.

He said that when the BJP was developing politically, it formed alliances with many regional parties including Shiv Sena. He said that BJP’s electoral security was also lost at many places at that time.

“The Shiv Sena had forged an alliance with the BJP because it wanted power for Hindutva. Shiv Sena never used Hindutva for power,” he said.

Shivsena has left BJP and not Hindutva. I believe BJP’s opportunistic Hindutva is only for power.

‘Opportunistic Alliance’

Mr Thackeray alleged that the BJP has forged an “opportunistic alliance” with the PDP in Kashmir. “BJP allied with Nitish Kumar (in Bihar), who spoke of a ‘Sangh Mukt’ (RSS-free) India,” he said.

After the 2019 Maharashtra elections, the Shiv Sena broke away from the BJP and formed an alliance with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Thackeray said the Shiv Sena openly formed a post-poll alliance with the Congress and the NCP, while the BJP “planned splits among other parties and overthrown elected governments to establish the party in power”.

He also said that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has shrunk as old constituents like Akali Dal and Shiv Sena have already exited the faction.

He said, “We supported the BJP wholeheartedly to enable them to fulfill their national ambitions. The understanding was that they would be national while we would lead in Maharashtra. But we were betrayed and destroyed in our house. That’s why we had to back down,” Mr Thackeray said, justifying his decision to forge an alliance with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party after the 2019 elections.
