Shivaji’s statue black in Bangalore, police increased vigil

According to eyewitnesses, a group of people threw ink on the idol and fled

Sadashivnagar Police in Bengaluru has intensified investigation to identify the miscreants who defaced the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji at Bashyam circle near Sanke Tank on December 17. Police suspect that the statue was darkened in response to the burning of the Kannada flag in Maharashtra.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) MN Anucheth said a case has been registered based on a complaint filed by the Karnataka Maratha Welfare Association (KMWA) and investigation is on to identify those involved in the act.

On the morning of December 17, a group of people gathered in front of the statue and started raising slogans. According to eyewitnesses, he threw ink on the statue before leaving the spot. Soon after, the police reached the spot. A police officer said the statue was cleaned and personnel were deployed in the area to ensure that no further incident takes place.

In view of the tension in Belagavi, the jurisdictional police have been directed to increase vigil and provide security cover to idols in other parts of the city as well.
