New Delhi: Senior Advocate cum Rajya Sabha MP… Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that he personally felt that these days one should either be a lawyer or an MP, not both. He was explaining the functioning of a whip by a political party.
When the judges on the bench – CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli And PS Narasimha – cast an inquisitive glance at Sibal, he said, “We get a three-line whip on WhatsApp. But the party is generous and exempts us from the rigors of disqualification because at times we miss the House due to preoccupation with the courts.” He then added, “In my personal opinion, there should be a lawyer or an MP or an MLA, not both.”

“Many years ago, while coming out of Rajya Sabha, a Communist leader had said that no CA, lawyer, engineer, architect, doctor or similar professionals should be in Parliament. Jaitley then remarked, ‘You (Left leaders) want the unemployed or unemployed to be only in Parliament? Certainly this cannot be your intention.
