Tao Art Gallery’s first NFT show will be launched by Viraj Khanna. The young artist’s solo show What My Mother Didn’t Teach Me… and Some Things She Did! Will run till 3rd April. The show, narrated by Khanna, builds the narrative using various elements from various magazines, encyclopedias, the primary premise of which is a paper collage. We contacted him to find out how his art is adapting to this rapidly changing environment.
What was the inspiration behind this exhibition?
The show has been created by thinking about the impact of society on individuals. As social animals, humans follow certain rules. There is a socially accepted way of behaving, dressing etc that we follow and thus there are many layers to the individuals. My artwork reflects the different layers we have as people living in society.
Was the pandemic creatively satisfying?
The pandemic just gave me a chance to express myself. I don’t think I would ever be doing anything creative if it wasn’t for the pandemic. Since I was a kid, I have always thought of having only twins who would handle the business side of things and take care of the special creative side.
What do you understand by virtual art exhibitions?
I don’t think anything can beat the physical appearance aspect of the show. When you physically look at an artwork, there is much more that you can see. Sometimes what I find really interesting is the work underneath something! At times we may see ‘over painting’ or re-painting etc. and this is something which we cannot really detect.
Which artists do you watch? How does an artist maintain their originality without being affected?
I really enjoy the work of Kawas, Wangechi Mutu, Dana Schutz to name a few!
My process always starts with a paper collage. I cut different elements out of magazines and started assembling them. Since no one else can find the same elements in the same order, the artwork is always going to be original.
