NEW DELHI: History student Shruti Sharma has topped the Civil Services Examination 2021, with the first three rank holders being women, in the results announced by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Monday.

Ankita Agarwal and Gamini Singla have secured the second and third positions respectively. UPSC said a total of 685 candidates – 508 men and 177 women – have qualified and their names were recommended by the commission for appointment to various central services.

“Finally among the eligible candidates, the top three are women candidates,” the commission said.

Sharma, who graduated in History (Hons) from Delhi University, topped the exam with history as an elective subject.

A graduate in Economics (Hons) from Delhi University, Agarwal secured second rank with Political Science and International Relations as optional subjects.

The UPSC said Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science with Sociology as an optional subject stood third in Singla.

It said that Aishwarya Verma secured the fourth position and Utkarsh Dwivedi secured the fifth position.

The top 25 candidates include 15 men and 10 women.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the successful candidates and had words of encouragement for those who could not clear the exam.

The educational qualifications of the top 25 successful candidates range from a bachelor’s in engineering; humanities; UPSC said that commerce and medical science from premier institutes of the country like IIT, AIIMS, VIT, PEC, Mumbai University, Delhi University, GB Pant University, etc.

The commission said the recommended candidates include 25 persons with benchmark disabilities (seven orthopedically challenged, five blind, eight hearing impaired and five multiplexed).

Of the successful candidates, 244 are from the general category, 73 from the economically weaker section, 203 from the other backward classes, 105 from the scheduled castes and 60 from the scheduled tribes.

The Civil Services Examination is conducted annually by UPSC in three stages – Preliminary, Main and Interview, to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS).

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2021 was held on October 10, 2021.

UPSC said that a total of 10,93,984 candidates had applied for this exam, out of which 5,08,619 candidates appeared for the exam.

9,214 candidates qualified to participate in the written (main) examination held in January 2022.

A total of 1,824 candidates qualified for the personality test of the exam.

The candidature of 80 candidates is provisional, while the result of one candidate has been withheld.
