Sikkim, Tripura districts top Northeast Sustainable Development Goals Index, Nagaland, Arunachal come last

New Delhi: East Sikkim has been ranked among the top 103 districts of the Northeast, followed by Gomti and North Tripura in the first edition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) index, which measures the performance of eight states on SDGs that are universal wells. addresses the major aspects of Is happening.

In the first edition of the North Eastern Region District SDG Index Report 2021-22, released by the government’s think-tank NITI Aayog on Thursday, two districts of Sikkim (East Sikkim and South Sikkim), seven districts of Tripura (Gomti, North Tripura, South Tripura, West Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai and Sepahijala) and three districts of Mizoram (Serchhip, Lunglei and Kolasib) are in the top 10 list. (Gomti and North Tripura are in second place while Dhalai and Sipahijala are in eighth place.)

Meanwhile, no district of Assam, the gateway to the Northeast, finds mention in the top ten list.

Kiphire of Nagaland was adjudged the worst performing district, followed by Zunheboto (Nagaland) and Kra Dadi (Arunachal Pradesh). In fact, six districts of Nagaland are mentioned in the 10 districts below. The North Garo Hills and Kamle, East Kamang and Shi Yomi in Meghalaya – all districts of Arunachal Pradesh – make up the bottom 10.

The index is based on NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index, the official tool used by India to monitor progress on SDGs at the national and state/UT level. The index provides insight into the social, economic and environmental status of a region and its districts towards achieving these goals.

Releasing the report, Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog said, “The North Eastern Region District SDG Index is an important milestone in our SDG journey which aims to leave no one behind and strengthen the SDG localization by keeping the districts in particular. Will do Our eight northeastern states are at the forefront of SDG adoption, implementation and monitoring.”

Of the 103 districts considered for ranking, 64 districts were in the front runner category (score between 65-99), while 39 districts were in the performance category (50-64) in the overall score and ranking of the districts.

While the scale ranged from 0-100, scores for 103 districts ranged from 53.00 in Kifir (Nagaland) to 75.87 in East Sikkim (Sikkim).

All the districts of Sikkim and Tripura fall in the topmost category, while there were no districts in the aspirational (0–49) or achievement (100) categories.

Sector scores high on cleanliness, industry low

According to the report, the Northeast as a region has performed remarkably well in meeting SDG 15 (Life on Land), which includes indicators such as forest cover, wasteland and wildlife affairs. Twelve districts of the region fall under the category of Achievers and 86 districts in the category of Front Runners.

The sector has also performed well in Target 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), where more than 75 per cent of the districts are at the forefront of sanitation and drinking water services indicators.

However, the entire North East region is lagging behind in Target 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), with 28 districts in the aspirational category. This target includes areas such as road, broadband and mobile connectivity.

Similarly, the report noted that meeting Goal 4 (quality education), Goal 11 (sustainable cities and communities, and Goal 13 (climate action) requires focused interventions to improve sector performance.

top performers

East Sikkim (Sikkim), Serchhip (Mizoram), South Sikkim (Sikkim), Kamrup Metropolitan (Assam) and Champhai (Mizoram) districts performed best in poverty alleviation.

Phek (Nagaland), Bishnupur (Manipur), Peren (Nagaland), Champhai (Mizoram), Imphal West (Manipur) and Kohima (Nagaland) achieved zero hunger targets.

In good health and well-being, Champhai (Mizoram), East Sikkim (Sikkim), North Sikkim (Sikkim), Upper Siang (Arunachal Pradesh), East Siang (Arunachal Pradesh) and Saiha (Mizoram) performed well.

Under quality education criteria, Aizawl (Mizoram), Kolasib (Mizoram), East Sikkim (Sikkim), Champhai (Mizoram), Serchhip (Mizoram) and West Sikkim (Sikkim) performed well.
