Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s bereaved parents saw his coffin and cried as a sea of mourners, fans and others waited for his funeral.

Visuals showed Sidhu Moose Wala’s mother hugging the glass coffin in which her body was kept. She stared at her son. As her father broke down, she turned to wipe her tears.

His father could not let go of the coffin and had to hold him as the body was taken away.

Thousands gathered for the cremation in the singer’s native village.

The 28-year-old rapper, who gathered a large number of fans at a young age, was shot dead by assailants on Sunday evening.

He was driving an SUV when the assailants blocked his car and fired over 30 bullets at him. In the post-mortem, more than two dozen bullet marks were found on his body.

Sidhu Moose Wala died on the spot. His father Balkaur Singh, who was in the car immediately behind, witnessed the attack and took him to the hospital.

The incident took place two days after the Punjab Police withdrew the security of 424 people, including Sidhu Moose Wala. He had joined the Congress in December, just before the Punjab elections.

Balkaur Singh wrote to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, demanding that an inquiry into the murder of his son be conducted by a sitting judge of the High Court.

He also demanded an apology from the Punjab Police and action against officials who propagated orders to withdraw Sidhu Moose Wala’s security along with other “VIPs” in the state.

The Punjab High Court has sought a detailed report on the number and reasons for those whose security was reduced or withdrawn.

Not only in India, there has been a wave of mourning from fans and celebrities on social media.
