Four members of a family were killed when a portion of a hill collapsed at a house in Muttalli in Bhatkal taluk of Uttara Kannada district, police sources said.

In another heart-wrenching incident reported from Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada district, bodies of two sisters were found holding hands together as a part of a hill at their house collapsed.

After much effort, the bodies of both the brothers were retrieved. Kusumadhar’s daughters Shruti (11 years of age) and Gyanshree (6) died in the accident on Monday.

It was raining heavily in Subramanya since Monday evening. A loud sound was heard at around seven in the evening. Shruti, who was reading a book in the verandah of the house, ran inside thinking that the voice must have come from there.

Gyanshree also ran inside the house. During this, a hill fell on his house. The mother of the children busy in the kitchen came out of the house thinking that the children would be outside.

A tree fell on the way and the water flow intensified, rescuers could not reach the spot immediately. Police sources said rain also hampered the operation.
