Heavy rains lashed Karnataka on Tuesday, killing six people, three of them in Bengaluru, in separate incidents.

Two contract laborers died while laying water pipes for residential layout in Jana Bharti, while another worker slipped from 40 feet high roof of a building in Sompura Industrial Layout of Dubspet.

Two laborers identified as 23-year-old Ankit Kumar Sahni from Bihar and 37-year-old Dev Bharat Kushwaha from Uttar Pradesh were forced to work overtime during the rains and their colleague Triloki also tried in vain. to take them out. The complainant Triloki also alleged that despite informing the project manager, site engineer and labor contractor, they came to the site the very next day to drain the water and take out the bodies.

Police arrested project manager Shiv Kumar; Harish Reddy, Site Engineer; Manoj Yadav, Labor Contractor; and Narasimharaju, HR manager of Mega Engineering and Infrastructure Estate (MEIL), accused him of causing death by negligence.

Stop request was ignored

Triloki told the police that he along with eight others was laying pipes near Ullal Lake for the fifth phase of Cauvery work by MEIL. The laborers stopped work when it started raining at 4 pm on Tuesday. The accused Shivakumar, Harish Reddy and Manoj Yadav reached the spot and asked Triloki, Ankit and Dev Bharat to stay till 9 pm to finish the work, and asked the others to go home.

Triloki alleged that his request to finish the pending work the next day citing bad weather went in vain and he was asked to finish the work by 9 pm. Ankit and Dev Bharat then come to the pipe, while Triloki is asked to help them with the necessary equipment. There was no ladder to climb down, and the 6-foot-deep pipe opening was as narrow as 2 feet.

While they were cultivating, rain water started flowing into the pipe. Both the laborers tried to climb up, but they drowned as there was no ladder. Triloki tries to pull them up, but fails. He shouted for help, but no one was around. He did not have a mobile phone to inform the labor contractor.

At around nine o’clock in the night, another laborer Pawan came to the spot and both informed the accused. However, they reached the site only at 6 am on Wednesday. Triloki told the police that the water was then pulled out and the bodies were pulled out.

A worker died after slipping off the roof of a chemical factory in Dubspet.
