Indian opener Smriti Mandhana on Friday (October 1) became the first Indian woman to score a century in a women’s cricket Test with the pink ball on the second day against Australia at Carrara, Queensland. In her fourth Test, Mandhana hit Ellyse Perry for her 18th four to score her maiden Test century in 170 balls.
Mandhana, who scored an unbeaten 80 overnight after most of the first day’s game was washed away due to rain, was caught on a no-ball in the 46th over of the innings but maintained her composure to reach the milestone.
Mandhana has acquainted herself with the pink ball for the past three months by keeping the pink ball in her kit bag, turning it on and off while trying to ‘understand’ it. When the idea came to him, there was little Mandhana knows her team will go into their first day-night test match With just two days of training session with the pink ball.

“I haven’t actually batted, I batted for just two seasons but the pink ball was in my kit bag for the last two and a half, three months. I don’t know why I kept it, I thought I would have a session but I didn’t really get time to do that,” Mandhana said during a virtual press conference on Thursday.
Mandhana started the rain-hit opening day with a career-best innings, with elegance written in it as the Indian women’s cricket team finished at 132 for 1. Speaking further on her preparation for the pink ball Test, she said, “I don’t feel like we had a lot of time to work on this, we’re just trying. The people who are sitting outside really did. helped me, they kept me energized throughout the day, they contributed to keep me focused like I am today,” Mandhana said.
The Indian star said that his plan was only to play according to the merit and not on the complicated things. “I didn’t want to just look at the scorecard, just trying to be blank and simple, play according to the ball. I didn’t really plan anything. The last two days I felt good, felt good I am able to bat. I will try to do that tomorrow as I don’t want to complicate things.”
Hosts Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, but the game did not start well. “He bowled a little less in the first 15 overs but made up in the later stages. We are used to batting first but with the kind of wicket it looked like we would have batted first. But now looking at the scoreboard, we are happy to bat first.
Mandhana said, “Openers have to come forward and whenever situations like these come, they have to give a good base.
