Soccer-Porto thrash Benfica to extend 3-1 lead

PORTO: Portuguese league leaders Porto delighted a capacity crowd at the Dragao Stadium with an emphatic 3-1 win over Benfica, who were shattered after being beaten by their bitter rivals for the second time in seven days.

After beating Benfica 3-0 in the Portuguese Cup last week, Porto put up another impressive performance to beat third-placed Benfica by seven points. Sporting are tied with Porto on 44 points from 16 games.

Porto fans Fabio Vieira and Pepe both scored in three minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead.

Roman Yaremchuk pulled one back for Benfica just after the break, but once defender Andre Almeida was sent off for a foul on Ottavio in the 49th minute, his hopes of scoring any further goals were over.

The hosts completed the goal in the 69th minute with a goal from Mehdi Taremi.
