Bangalore:

The ongoing unrest in the state of Karnataka over whether students should be allowed to wear hijab in educational institutions has caught the attention of actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja.

Taking to Instagram, Sonam Kapoor shared a picture of a man in a turban and a woman in a hijab, and questions why a turban can be an option but a hijab cannot.

Sonam Kapoor’s post comes days after several women in Karnataka were harassed by protesters for wearing hijab.

The entire controversy erupted after the Karnataka government on February 5 issued an order mandating a dress code in all schools and colleges, banning clothing “disturbing equality, integrity and public law and order”.

A day earlier, lyricist Javed Akhtar had also condemned the alleged attacks on women for wearing hijab.

“I have never been in favor of the hijab or the burqa. I still stand by that but at the same time, I have nothing but deep contempt for these hordes of goons who intimidate a small group of girls. Trying and failing that too. This is his idea of ’manhood’. What a pity,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, on Friday, the Supreme Court refused to urgently hear appeals against the Karnataka High Court’s interim order (written order yet to be issued) banning hijab and other religious attire in schools and colleges in the state. .
