Former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on August 19 changed his profile picture to black colour and joined hands with thousands of users who changed their display image on social media to express their solidarity with the trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was raped and murdered. However, Ganguly is facing severe backlash for this.
Netizens have criticised Ganguly for changing his profile picture to black, calling it a superficial response following backlash over his insensitive remarks. Some users also demanded an apology for his statement.

Another user said, “The silence from some of our heroes in the face of the heinous crime in Kolkata is deafening. A black profile picture on X isn’t enough when justice demands our voices. This incident, where a young doctor was brutally assaulted, cries out for not just our sympathy but our active outrage and demand for justice.”

Why are social media users criticising Ganguly for changing his profile picture?
Earlier, the former BCCI President commented on the horrific rape and murder case by defending the Mamata Banerjee government and termed it a “stray incident.”
“I don’t think everything should be judged on an stary incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this (incident). Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident.”
Ganguly later clarified that his remarks were misunderstood, stating, “I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now, the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened.”
