India skipper Virat Kohli is likely to overtake the team’s head coach Rahul Dravid’s run-scoring case in Test matches in South Africa in the upcoming series between the two teams. The three-Test series is starting from December 26.

Dravid’s average in South Africa was low compared to the high standards he had set throughout his career. The former India captain scored 624 runs in 22 innings in South Africa at an average of 29.71 with one century and two half-centuries.

Kohli, on the other hand, has two centuries and two half-centuries to his name and has so far scored a total of 558 runs in just 10 innings at an average of 55.80. He is thus just 66 runs away from overtaking Dravid.

Kohli is the fourth highest run-scorer for India in Tests played in South Africa. He will overtake Dravid to move to the second spot in the list as former batsman VVS Laxman is currently at the third spot with 556 runs from 18 innings.

Kohli, however, is far from becoming the all-time highest run-scorer of batting great Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar played 15 Tests in South Africa in which he scored 1161 runs at an average of 46.44. Tendulkar scored five centuries and three half-centuries in South Africa.

Kohli is just 177 runs away from overtaking Dravid in the all-time list of Test matches played between the two sides. The 33-year-old has so far scored 1075 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 59.72, while Dravid has scored 1252 runs at 33.83. Tendulkar tops the list with 1741 runs in 25 Tests, while Virender Sehwag is second with 1306 runs in 15 Tests.

The upcoming three-Test series will be Dravid’s first overseas tour as India’s head coach.
