South Korea submits official bid to host 2023 AFC Asian Cup

The Korean Football Association (KFA) said that South Korea officially submitted its bid to stage the Asian Cup in 2023, following China’s decision to give up its hosting rights.

The Asian Football Confederation had extended its deadline for bids to July 15 after a 24-team event from China in June and July next year due to the country’s strict COVID-19 policy.

“KFA has officially submitted a letter of intent to the Asian Football Confederation to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup,” the governing body said on Thursday.

South Korea won the inaugural Asian Cup in 1956 and retained the trophy four years later as hosts, the only time they staged the final. The country has not staged a major tournament since co-hosting World Cup with Japan in 2002.
