SpaceX Believes US’s 5G Plan Will Deactivate Starlink for Most Americans

If Dish Network is allowed to use 12GHz spectrum for its 5G cellular network, SpaceX has warned that customers of its Starlink service in the United States could face severe disruption to their Internet connections.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will make a final decision after receiving requests for permission to use the 12GHz band from companies including Dish Network and New York’s RS Access, among others.

However, data previously published by Dish indicate that ground-based 5G networks can easily share frequency with low-Earth orbit satellite networks such as SpaceX’s Starlink service.

But according to a statement on SpaceX’s website: “Despite technical studies refuting the basis of their claims as of 2016, Dish has attempted to mislead the FCC with faulty analysis in hopes of obscuring the truth.”

“If DISH’s lobbying efforts are successful, our study shows that Starlink customers will experience harmful interference more than 77% of the time and 74% of the total outages of service, which makes Starlink the most common cause for most Americans. would make it unusable,” said SpaceX, which has launched. 2,500 Starlink satellites have been placed in orbit for its broadband service.

The Elon Musk-led company also provided a 12-page technical report detailing how Dish’s envisioned mobile services would cause huge disruption to customers of next-generation satellite services, such as Starlink.

It said that a high-gain antenna, such as a SpaceX user terminal, is designed with sufficient sensitivity to receive very weak signals from the desired transmitter, but that “such antennas, however, may not be able to transmit signals coming from other directions.” Do not ‘reject’ interference”. As a result, interference will completely eliminate the target signal.

Meanwhile, according to reports, a Dish spokesperson said its engineers are “evaluating SpaceX’s claims.”

It should be noted that last week Dish said it has launched commercial 5G services in more than 100 US locations, covering about 20% of the country’s population, using frequencies from other spectrum bands. However, whether it will be able to reach the 12GHz frequency as part of a 5G deployment remains to be seen.
