Spotify has announced that the company is “retiring” the Car View feature it launched in 2019. The mode essentially offers enhanced play/pause and skip buttons as well as makes the view page less cluttered to prevent drivers from getting distracted. feature too inspired amazon To roll out its own version of Car Mode on the Amazon Music app earlier this year. According to Spotify, the company is working on an alternative, but there is no clarity on the rollout. The Swedish company says that until Spotify introduces its own solution, users can use the Google Assistant virtual assistant while driving to enable hands-free control.

In a reply on its community forum, Spotify explained, “We can confirm that we are eliminating the Car View feature. However that doesn’t mean we don’t want to improve the way our users drive. In contrast to how you listen to Spotify, we’re actively exploring new ways to deliver the best listening experience in the car. Think about turning off Car-view, the new innovation coming on track. There should be an effort to make way for it.”

It’s unclear why Spotify decided to remove Car View mode from the app, though it’s plausible that the feature wasn’t widely used. Likewise, there are many ways (and even gadgets) out there to help with handsfree control, so it’s likely that Spotify is working on a similar (if not better) solution. Additionally, many modern cars allow users to change or play music directly through steering controls or an inbuilt car audio system.

It makes more sense for the company to invest in hands-free controls now that will be especially useful while driving. For example, Google discontinued Android Auto for the phone screen earlier this year. After introducing Android 12, the company replaced it with Google Assistant driving mode. However, cars that directly support Android Auto can continue to use the app.
