Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 187 runs in the first Test in Galle to take the lead in the series. Chasing a tough fourth innings target of 348 to win the match, Tourists were bowled out for 160 in the second innings, giving Sri Lanka their first win of the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The win was started by Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored a scintillating century in the first innings (147) followed by a scintillating 83 in the second innings. Ramesh Mendis took 7 wickets in the match, while Lasith Embuldeniya broke the back of the Windies batting with 5 wickets in the second innings.

With this win, Sri Lanka have reached the top of the points table of the World Test Championship. The ICC on Thursday shared a picture of the WTC points table, as it is currently, with the caption, “Sri Lanka on top. ICC. #wtc23 Points table after first #SLVWI testing.”

Despite winning only one Test compared to India’s two Test matches on an incomplete tour of England, the Sri Lankan team overtook India. This is because Sri Lanka have a high percentage (PCT), which is 100 per cent as they have won the only Test they have played in this cycle so far.

India won two Tests, lost one and drew one, bringing their PCT to 54.17, with Pakistan in third place as they have a PCT of 50, having won 1 of the two matches they played and lost 1. The table standings will change based on the result of the first Test between New Zealand and India, which is currently underway in Kanpur.
