With the pandemic closing in and affecting people’s mental health, there has been a huge increase in the number of suicide cases across the world in the last two and a half years. To be clear, the Valley is no different in this regard. Youth in Jammu and Kashmir have been affected by the impact of COVID-19, which has resulted in several cases of depression and suicide. Keeping this in mind, an NGO SRO Kashmir in association with Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Kashmir has launched the first suicide prevention helpline named ‘Zindagi’. The helpline number 18002701008, works daily from 6 pm to 11 pm and can potentially play a role in curbing the number of suicide cases. Presently, the helpline is supported by a team of 14 psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. The helpline call will also be available in English, Urdu and Kashmiri to reduce the language barriers. Expert doctors working with the NGO will help the patients through counseling. Psychological support will also be provided to the patients.
