SSLC student who attempted suicide for not getting permission to take board, tops supplementary exam

Greshma Nayak was shocked to see her name missing from the list of candidates for SSLC exam in July. In desperation, he tried to kill himself but was saved in time. Then Education Minister S Suresh Kumar met him at his home in Koratagere, Tumkur and assured him of an opportunity to write the board exams as a ‘fresher’ in supplementary.

A student of Alva’s English Medium High School, Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada, Grishma studied in studies. Due to the pandemic, she returned home when she was in class 9. Later the education department promoted all the students to class 10 and summer also moved to the next class.

But there was a pending charge that played a villainous role in her case, explains Grishma’s father Narasimha Murthy (BR). Talking to News18, Murthy said, “From class IX there was a pending fee of Rs 70,000 which we had to pay. Since the classes stopped midway and there were no exams, we didn’t think about it. And when the next When asked about the class, the school administration said that we should clear the past dues and also pay the class 10 fees which was around Rs 1 lakh. They asked us to settle the entire amount in one installment.”

“Due to the pandemic, I could not make any payment for it. We were having trouble at home. Not knowing that the school did not name Greshma for SSLC exam registration, we inquired about the hall ticket. That’s when we came to know that the school dropped his name because we were unable to pay the said fee,” he said.

With the intervention of the then Education Minister Suresh Kumar S, the school registered his name with the board for the supplementary examination. He was considered a fresher and scored 599 out of 625. “I was expecting more. But, the tension level was too high and I missed some of the answers. However, I am happy to score well. I want to take science in PUC and then appear for NEET,” said Grishma.

All this, while he did not get to attend any online classes due to lack of admission. Her elder sister, who is a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) student, taught Grisma for the last three months. She borrowed textbooks from her superiors and studied very diligently with the help of her sister. All this happened when the results came out.

Former minister Suresh Kumar S, who was instrumental in giving the girl another chance to keep pace with her class, congratulated her and expressed happiness over her score. He said in a message on social media, ‘I am very relieved that the girl worked hard and won.
