Stamp duty on property registration to increase in Mumbai, other cities of Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government will once again start collecting 1% Metro Cess on purchase of property in the cities of Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur and Pune, an official said on Friday.

Speaking to PTI, Principal Secretary (Urban Development) Bhushan Gagrani said that the state government in February 2019 had decided to levy 1% Metro Cess on property purchases in four cities, including Mumbai.

But its implementation was put on hold after a year due to the outbreak of Kovid-19 in March 2020. “This is not a new decision. We are reviving the earlier decision, which had to be called off due to the pandemic,” he said. He said that the stamp duty on property registration will increase by 1% due to Metro Cess.

“Our goal is to get the revenue of 700 cr to 800 crore annually. As of March 2020, we have received revenue of approx. from 500 crores 550 crores,” he said. The purpose of the metro cess is to fund transport infrastructure projects in these cities.

The state government on Thursday announced that after more than two years, all epidemiological restrictions, including mandatory wearing of masks, will be lifted in Maharashtra.
