Starlink is now active on all continents: Elon Musk

Starlink is a part of Elon MuskSpace Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX). It delivers Internet broadband to a group of satellites orbiting in low Earth orbit. The company said in a recent filing that Starlink has launched more than 3,000 satellites and serves more than 400,000 customers.

Low orbit satellites orbit the planet in about 90 to 120 minutes. This is a departure from the established practice of using some powerful spacecraft in higher and slower orbits. The advantage of Starlink is that its signals reach quickly.

There are about 1,000 people at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. They already have satellite internet at a speed of 17 Mbps, but are not reliable in bad conditions. With Starlink, internet service in the region is expected to improve.

The test at Antarctica’s McMurdo Station covers Starlink’s Internet coverage on all of Earth’s continents. NSF says the increased bandwidth will help scientists working in the remote continent near the South Pole.

“Starlink is now on all seven continents! In a remote location like Antarctica, this capability is enabled by Starlink’s Space Laser Network,” Starlink tweeted.

Meanwhile, US wireless carriers T-Mobile US Inc and Elon Musk-owned SpaceX has outlined plans to connect users’ mobile phones directly to satellites in orbit. T-Mobile will now use SpaceX’s Starlink satellites to provide network access to mobile users in parts of the United States, according to Reuters news agency. “Most mobile phones used by the company’s customers will be compatible with the new service. It will begin with texting services in a beta phase by the end of next year,” Musk said.
