Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Thursday said that even a single crime against women in Bengal under a woman chief minister is shameful, giving ammunition to the opposition, which asked him to remind his own party about the humiliation. said.
Speaking at the inauguration of a police station in North 24 Parganas, Roy said: Everyone is concerned about women’s safety, we have to show zero tolerance. If even a single incident happens in a state where there is a woman chief minister, it will be shameful for us. Strict action should be taken against the culprits.”
The leader’s remarks come in the backdrop of probe into the Hankhali rape and murder incident in which a minor girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party earlier this month. The girl’s family claimed that the main accused is the son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat member, who was arrested for further investigation.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was criticized for her statement in which she questioned the allegations of rape. “The police are yet to understand the cause of death. I asked them. Would you call it rape or was she pregnant? Was it (the result) a love affair? Have you inquired about them? This is an unfortunate incident,” Banerjee had said.
Meanwhile, reacting to Roy’s statement, BJP’s chief spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said: “Imagine, they are also saying the same. He’s a veteran, he knows it. If he feels like this then he will have to tell this to his party. Why did such an incident happen? He himself is saying that it is a matter of shame.”
Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: “He is a senior man and said so to divert attention.”
Roy’s statement has sparked a flurry of questions even within the TMC, with many leaders questioning the need to point out the fact that a woman chief minister was at the helm of affairs.
Known for speaking his heart, Roy was also in praise of political strategist Prashant Kishor, even when TMC seniors were locked in a tussle with him.
