Stelantis, the world’s sixth-largest automaker, has said it wants to be seen as a mobility tech company rather than a car maker. To that effect, the company is targeting an incremental income of EUR 20 billion from software-driven vehicles by 2030. While the bigger target is 34 million connected vehicles by the end of the decade, a closer target is to make the most of new vehicles capable of receiving over-the-air updates by 2024. And India is set to play a major role in this.

Of the three technology centres, Satellite’s Hyderabad unit will be the key for software-intensive projects with autonomous driving and connected vehicle technologies, as the focus is on artificial technology and software engineering. The center was founded last year by Fiat Chrysler. Chamarthy wants to double the number of engineers at Stelantis’ Hyderabad Tech Center and plans to hire around 4,500 software engineers in the company’s technology centers. Apart from the standard recruitment process, the company is also looking at partnerships with universities in India and rest of the world to create a talent pool.
