Thrissur, Kerala:

A four-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with bruises all over his body, including his face, after he was allegedly beaten up by his stepfather at Thuvanur in Kunnamkulam town of this central Kerala district on Tuesday.

Police said the child was first taken to a nearby hospital and later shifted to the Government Medical College where his condition is stable.

A police officer from Kunnamkulam police station said that on the basis of the statement of the child’s mother, Prasad’s stepfather was taken into custody.

The man, who worked as a private bus conductor, brutally thrashed the child with wooden sticks, alleging that he could not sleep properly at night as the boy was crying, the officer said.

The incident came to light after the mother disclosed this to one of her neighbours, who informed the police.

“We reached home and arranged for the child to be taken to the hospital. The woman’s statement was recorded and the stepfather was taken into custody,” the officer said.

He said his arrest would be registered soon after detailed interrogation.
