Sydney: Star Australia Batter steven smith Was ruled out of the remainder of the T20I series against on Sunday Sri Lanka After injuring him while fielding during his team’s win in the Super Over in the second match at the SCG here.
Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed after the match that Smith had suffered a head injury after a spectacular diving attempt to save a six in the final over of the second innings, according to ESPNcrisino.
He will be subject to low-level concussion protocol over the next few days. The senior batsman is expected to make a full recovery within a week but will miss the last three games in Canberra and Melbourne.
Smith was fielding at deep midwicket in the final over of Sri Lanka’s chase Mahesh Dikshana launched Marcus Stoinis in his direction. Smith dived back full length and to his right to catch the ball and flick it back into the field in a single motion but his head hit the turf in the process.
He felt some discomfort and was immediately treated by the medical staff. Smith went without much assist but did not field in the last two balls or during the Super Over.
Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood said Smith was fine despite initial concerns.
“When someone dives in and doesn’t wake up right away, it’s always a matter of concern,” Hazlewood was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“It’s good to see him spin now. He’s made his way off the field and he’s turning now. So the early signs are good.”
