‘Stop Bulldozers of Hate’: Opposition Questions BJP’s Weapon of Law & Order as SC Halts Demolition in Delhi

Days after violence broke out between two groups in Jahangirpuri on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, the Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a two-day anti-encroachment drive in the area by the BJP-run Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The court ordered “status quo” and said it would continue the hearing on Thursday.

The NDMC had asked the Delhi Police to deploy at least 400 personnel to maintain law and order. The Municipal Corporation has said in a letter to the police that a joint anti-encroachment program of Public Works Department, Health and Sanitation Department and others is proposed in Jahangirpuri. Delhi BJP President Adesh Gupta has also written a letter to the Mayor of North Corporation, asking him to identify and demolish the illegal constructions of ‘rioters’ in Jahangirpuri. A copy of the letter has been sent to the Municipal Commissioner.

The demolition drive has sparked a war of words between the BJP and the opposition, with many questioning the saffron party’s reliance on bulldozers to ensure law and order. This trend in Uttar Pradesh started with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath earning the nickname ‘Bulldozer Baba’ and spread to Madhya Pradesh as Shivraj Singh Chouhan took a leaf out of Yogi’s books and established his identity as ‘Bulldozer Mama’ . There has now been a call for a similar strategy to be implemented in Karnataka, where several right-wing organizations want the property of the riot-accused to be vandalized.

However, the move angered the opposition, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling for “the bulldozer of hate to stop”. “India has only 8 days of coal reserves as a result of 8 years of great discussion. Modi ji, the era of inflation is going on. Small industries will collapse due to power cuts, which will lead to further loss of jobs. Stop the bulldozers of hate and start power plants!” Gandhi said on Twitter.

His colleague Manish Tewari also joined in and said that those instigating the riots should be arrested. “I don’t agree with bulldozer politics, it’s against the law.”

Earlier, former UP chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had criticized the move, saying: “Uttar Pradesh is in the grip of anarchy and jungle raj. This has been the situation for the last five years. Keeping his hands on the steering of the bulldozer, the Chief Minister is chasing the opposition while criminals who are safe from power are wreaking havoc outside.
