Storage will improve in Prakasam barrage

Prakasam Barrage, the last of the reservoir projects on Krishna, is going to increase water storage or fast capacity after the completion of the ongoing dredging works.

Earlier this year, the state government approved a Rs 102 crore project to desilt the Krishna river, about 13 km from the Prakasam barrage.

“The work started in September and is about to be completed in a year. Once the desilting work is completed, the storage capacity of the barrage will increase by 0.5 tmc ft,” said A. Muralikrishna Reddy says He said that the annual and operational maintenance of the barrage is going on uninterruptedly as per the schedule and requirements.

While the storage capacity of the barrage increases, colonies in Ramalingeshwara Nagar, Krishnalanka and other areas will remain at risk of flooding till the construction of the flood protection wall is completed.

The 1.5 km long flood protection wall in Krishnalanka was constructed in April this year at a cost of over Rs 122 crore. The wall is believed to protect more than 3,000 homes from flooding during the floods. Over 31,000 people living in low-lying areas of Ranigri Thota, Bhupesh Gupta Nagar, Taraka Ram Nagar and other areas are facing floods after two lakh cusecs of water was released into the barrage.
