Strong earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit India-Myanmar border area

It was felt in Chittagong in Bangladesh and the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, about 280 miles (450.62 km) from Aizawl, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) website and accounts of witnesses posted by users on Twitter.

“Very strong,” one such witness posted on EMSC from Chittagong, about 184 km (115 mi) west of the epicenter of the quake.

According to EMSC and India’s earthquake monitoring agency, the tremors were felt in the states of Northeast India and major cities of Bangladesh.

The EMSC had earlier pegged the earthquake at 5.8 after giving it a magnitude of 6.0.
