Student’s death, many sick due to liver infection from polluted water

Many students in Kota are reported to be suffering from serious liver ailments due to the polluted water of the city. One such student, 18-year-old Vaibhav Roy, who was preparing for NEET exam and was diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy, died during treatment at a private hospital on Thursday.

The exact cause of Vaibhav’s death will be known after a medical examination, but three water suppliers in the area are found to be supplying contaminated water to coaching institutes, hostels and canteens, Kota’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Jagdish Soni told news agency told PTI.

Vaibhav was a native of West Bengal but had been living with his family in the area’s Kaithoon town for many years.

Hepatic encephalopathy is a nervous system disorder brought on by severe liver disease. Around 36 students from Jawahar Nagar area of ​​the city are suffering from the disease, out of which 18 are reported to be cured, while others are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

Dr. Rajeev Sharma, who treated Vaibhav, said that he was admitted to the hospital on October 5 with complaints of fever and jaundice, but it was later discovered that he had hepatic encephalopathy. Due to the illness, the swelling in his brain became severe and he died on Thursday.

“At least 10-12 coaching students are undergoing treatment for Hepatitis-A for more than a week,” said Dr. KK Pareek of SN Pareek Memorial and Multi-Specialty Hospital.

“The infection is most likely to be caused by contaminated water and food because the patients’ liver enzymes were found to be dangerously high, but all of them are improving,” he said.

Kota Additional District Magistrate Brijmohan Bairwa said that the CMHO has been instructed to investigate and the report is awaited.
