India’s Sudhir on Thursday won the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games.

Asian Para Games bronze medalist Sudhir lifted 208 kg in his first attempt and increased it to 212 kg.

Sudhir, 27, handicapped by the effects of polio, thus opened India’s para sports medal account in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

Ikechuku Kristian Obichuku won the silver medal with 133.6 points, while Mickey Yule took the bronze with 130.9 points.

Sudhir had won bronze in men’s 88kg with a best lift of 214kg at the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championships in South Korea in June.

Sudhir, who started powerlifting in 2013 in Sonipat, has also qualified for the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games, which was postponed to next year.
